Information Systems (18 months, Master of Science)

Description

The MSc in Information Systems provides an in-depth understanding of the role of information systems in meeting organizational challenges. The program develops technical knowledge and skills in the design, implementation and management of information systems to respond to market demands and industry trends. Subjects covered include the use of Decision Support Systems (DSSs) in business intelligence, and the integration and operation of e-business systems, including issues related to user interface and IS usability. By the end of the course, students are expected to undertake original research to identify and resolve a ‘real-world’ problem, using IS to support organizational objectives.

Foundation courses may be required for those applicants whose academic background is such that they cannot proceed directly to the IS core courses. Students must have completed the foundation courses at an accredited institution. Credits earned with foundation courses do not count towards the required coursework for the completion of the program.

Objectives & Outcomes

General Objectives
  1. To develop the student’s analytical, decision-making and communication competencies together with those qualities of self-reliance, responsibility, integrity and self-awareness, which will promote personal achievement and contribute to organizations;
  2. To undertake substantial investigative and practical work at postgraduate level;
  3. To develop the student’s capacity to think, write and speak effectively and creatively;
  4. To build on and enlarge the student’s domain specific knowledge with a minimum of guidance;
  5. To progress to research work or work at an advanced level within an individual or commercial setting;
  6. To provide the student with the basic requirements for academic and/or career advancement;
  7. To assist the student in developing leadership abilities which can be used to arrive at solutions to design IS, and to prepare the student for a lifetime career in IS by establishing a foundation for lifelong learning and development.
Specific Objectives
  1. To fully understand the business dimension of IS in the era of globalization;
  2. To acquire the necessary technological know-how in order to fully appreciate the new emerging role that the e-dimension plays and shall continue to play in IS;
  3. To prepare students to design, develop, install, manage and maintain IS, and to become  managers in the IS area;
  4. To prepare students for careers in commerce, government, industry, and various institutions as IS specialists;
  5. To ensure a learning experience which will provide students with the necessary academic and professional know-how to contribute to the business community;
  6. To expose students to the area of scientific research and independent study;
  7. To evaluate and make critical use of literature in developing innovative ideas;
  8. To utilize the student’s knowledge in practical applications;
  9. To plan investigative projects in IS and take these to reasonable completion;
  10. To appreciate and manage the symbiosis of business and IS cultures.
Learning Outcomes
  • Determine where IS can be deployed to gain strategic and tactical advantage.
  • Demonstrate how business strategy can be enhanced with IT.
  • Assess the features of successful and unsuccessful e-Businesses ideas.
  • Identify ‘real-world’ problems to which academic concepts and methods can be realistically applied, incorporating original research to improve or resolve a problem situation.
  • Demonstrate the use of appropriate legal, social and ethical issues and obligations within the context of an IS project.
  • Demonstrate the concept of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and how it supports business operation.
  • Discuss social and professional issues associated with information systems project management.
  • Improve written and oral technical research skills.
  • Evaluate the impact of e-Business/IT applications on organizational performance and construct an e-Business plan for the e-Business opportunity that students have identified and researched. 
  • Apply Web marketing techniques in e-business.
  • Evaluate the key technologies and technology trends, including CRM, SCM and ERP, that are necessary for integrating and operating an e-business system.
  • Identify, predict and understand common usability problems encountered by IS users.
  • Carry out detailed interface evaluation, identifying usability deficiencies and relating designs to requirements engineering.
  • Illustrate the various types of DSS and how they can be used in business intelligence.
  • Design and evaluate DSS interfaces.
  • Analyze and determine the networking requirements for the provision of networked services and selection of the appropriate technologies.
  • Design and develop networked products and services, supporting business objectives and adding measurable value to businesses and organizations.
  • Apply critical and holistic thinking on KM concepts and practices within various organizational contexts and business sectors.
  • Evaluate the benefits of Data and KM implementations.
  • Analyze and evaluate information visualization techniques.
  • Discuss the various issues related to business intelligence and information visualization.
  • Select and employ requirements engineering elicitation methodologies based on the nature of the business environment.
  • Manage projects effectively and efficiently by using specific project management methodologies in order to complete them successfully on time and within budgeted resources.

Αρχικά θα εξετάσει τα υπάρχοντα πληροφοριακά συστήματα και στη συνέχεια θα χαρτογραφήσει και θα τεκμηρίωση τις διάφορες μεταξύ παλαιών και νέων συστημάτων, κατανοώντας την ανάπτυξη λογισμικού κύκλου ζωής. θα αναλάβει την ανάπτυξη του προϊόντος, και τελικά θα εφαρμόσει η θα ρυθμίσει τις ποιο εφικτές λύσεις.
