The Future of Graphic Design: Colloquium on Education and Talent in the AI Era

On the afternoon of October 15th, the colloquium “The Future of Graphic Design: Education and Talent in the AI Era,” chaired by Mr. Spyros Karkotis of the European University Cyprus (EUC), was successfully held at the International Digital Economy College (IDEC). This dialogue brought together faculty and student representatives to engage in in-depth discussions and intellectual exchange on the transformation of design education and new pathways for talent cultivation in the AI era.

The colloquium featured Demetra Englezou, Lead Program Coordinator of the cooperative education program and Coordinator of the Graphic Design (GD) program at the European University Cyprus (EUC), and Dr. Chi Han, Assistant to the Dean of the Fine Arts and Design College (FAD College) of Minjiang University and Coordinator of GD at IDEC, as keynote speakers. The event welcomed full-time graphic design faculty from FAD College, IDEC, and EUC, along with selected students. The atmosphere was vibrant, with engaged discussions on cutting-edge design trends, innovative thinking methods, and the multiple identities of designers in cross-cultural contexts, offering multi-dimensional perspectives for the development of design education in the AI era.

The academic dialogue centered around four core themes. Regarding “The Mindset Transformation of Designers in the AI Era,” experts emphasized that AI should serve as a collaborative force for design innovation, while designers must retain their unique humanistic concern and emotional expression capabilities. On the “Impact of AI on Design Curriculum Systems,” participants agreed that AI tools should be appropriately integrated into courses, with greater emphasis placed on cultivating students’ independent thinking and critical reasoning skills. During the exchange session, attendees actively shared their “Reflections on the Identity of Future Designers in the AI Era.” There was consensus that designers must not only solidify their professional foundation but also develop a global perspective, becoming innovators adept at drawing inspiration from diverse cultures. Concerning “Cross-cultural Design Exchange and Academic Planning,” participants unanimously affirmed the importance of stimulating innovative inspiration through cross-cultural dialogue, allowing design to become a bridge connecting different civilizations.

The colloquium successfully established an open and inclusive interdisciplinary platform for exchange. It not only deepened the understanding of design education philosophies in the AI era but also explored innovative models for talent cultivation and laid a solid foundation for subsequent international exchange and cooperation.
