Posted: February 13, 2020

The European University Cyprus Center secured the role of Coordinator in two out of three programs having as end users the Police and Fire Service

Following the announcement of the results of the recent call for proposals by the Secure Societies – Protecting Freedom and Security of Europe and its Citizens of the funding program HORIZON 2020, the European University Cyprus’ CERIDES – Center for Excellence in Innovation and Technology has received €1.1 million for three major projects.

It is noteworthy that European University Cyprus will for the first time act as a Coordinator in an EU Framework Program, with CERIDES coordinating two of the three projects for which it is receiving funding from a total of 325 projects submitted Europe-wide and where the success rate is usually below 10%.

The CERIDES – Excellence in Innovation and Technology will receive for the next 36 months funding worth over €1.1 million (of which €800,000 will be for salaries and new research positions) and will manage as coordinator over €12.5 million in consortia with 34 and 20 partners respectively.

These projects have the Cyprus Police and Fire Service as end users, who are expected to benefit from the results. Total funding from National and European programs for CERIDES now exceeds €4 million.

The programs to be coordinated by European University Cyprus are Respond-A (total budget €7,666,225) under Dr. George Kioumourtzis, and METICOS (total budget €4,997,481.25) coordinated by Dr. Pantelis Velanas. The University is also participating in the GRACE project (total budget €6,999,650).

These and ongoing projects – currently CERIDES coordinates IDeK’s projects (ERASMUS+, DG HOME Internal Security Fund) – help the university and Cyprus in general in the areas of research and internationalization, while also creating new high-intensity jobs.
