European University Cyprus School of Medicine Class of 2022 Graduation Ceremony

Posted: June 20, 2022

The European University Cyprus School of Medicine on Friday night honoured the students of 2022 in the context of a highly symbolic ceremony that marked their passage into the medical community, as equal members. The graduates later signed the Medical School Alumni Book with the initials of their new professional identity, MD.

The swearing-in ceremony, where the Oath of Hippocrates was recited by the graduates themselves, was presided over by the President of the Pancyprian Medical Association, Dr. Petros Agathangelou. The graduates received a copy of the Oath signed by the President and the Dean of the School of Medicine. The ceremony took place in the presence of distinguished scientists and acclaimed members of the Cypriot and Greek scientific community, as well as family, friends, and of course the academic community of European University Cyprus.

The keynote speaker at the event was Professor Sir Martin Evans, winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Medicine, a pioneer in the field of stem cell biology. Sir Martin’s work on embryonic stem cells is now the basis of targeted genetic manipulation, allowing for the creation of models of human diseases. Wearing the red regalia of the Doctor of Science at the University of Cambridge, Sir Martin stressed the importance of research in medical science.

Addressing the graduates, the Rector of European University Cyprus, Professor Andreas Efstathiou, said: “You have worked hard for six years for this important moment. And you arrived here after dealing with extraordinary circumstances caused by the pandemic that has affected all of humanity during the past two years. That certainly makes your success today even more important”.

The Dean of the School of Medicine, Professor Elizabeth Johnson, stated that the passage of graduates into the professional arena implies a deep awareness of their commitment to act as ambassadors of moral principles, scientific integrity, and excellence through innovation that underpin the operation of the European University Cyprus Medical School.

The young graduates return to society as responsible citizens and highly qualified scientists, having studied in a pioneering learning model in the state-of-the-art facilities of the Medical School, which has not only upgraded the quality of university education in Cyprus but has become one of the most important medical institutions in South-East Europe.

The award ceremony reflected the multinational and multicultural nature of the curriculum and culture that governs the European University Cyprus School of Medicine, which is one of the main reasons why students from many different countries choose it. The success and ethos of the class of 2022 now becomes part of the growing tradition of graduates and the rich heritage of European University Cyprus. The young doctors of European University Cyprus are fully equipped with scientifically-proven knowledge and high-level education and are ready to become the next leaders of Medical Science.
