The new minister of Education at European University Cyprus

The Republic of Cyprus’ new Minister of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth, Mr. Prodromos Prodromou, paid a courtesy visit to European University  Cyprus [on Thursday 16 January]. The Minister was welcomed by the university’s academic and adminitrative governing bodies.

The Rector, Professor Kostas Gouliamos, outlined the university’s recent achievements on a regional and international level and stressed the “need for the state to safeguard the high quality and excellence of university education so that Cyprus can credibly and dynamically compete with other countries in the international education field”. The Rector said the State, in particular the ministry of Education, must strengthen Cyprus’ strategic goal of becoming a hub for tertiary education. He suggested the set-up of an institution that would serve to promote Cyprus in this regard, stressing the need to create the necessary conditions for the establishment of the Knowledge Economy.

The President of the Council and CEO of the university Dr. Christoforos Hadjikyprianou referred to matters relating to the smooth operation of universities in Cyprus particularly as regards their sustainability and the need for further developing relations between them. Minister Prodromos Prodromou highlighted the significant role of university education for Cyprus and pointed to the growing numbers of students from various countries and continents that European University Cyprus has been attracting.
