Demetrios Christofias Receives Honorary Doctoral Degree from European University Cyprus

Mr. Demetrios Christofias, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, became the first doctoral graduate of European University Cyprus (EUC) when he was presented with an honorary doctoral degree after speaking to a large audience on Wednesday evening, June 22, 2011. Recognized not only for his service to the country as President of the Republic of Cyprus, but also for his commitment to educational, social and cultural issues and policies, Mr. Demetrios Christofias has been named recipient of the honorary degree, Doctor of Social Sciences and Humanities by European University Cyprus.

The honorary doctorate is bestowed by the EUC Senate acting on the recommendation of the School Council.  Eligible are distinguished individuals with an outstanding achievement record, unique service and exemplary accomplishment within their fields of endeavour. Professor Andreas Orphanides, EUC Rector, and Vice Rector Professor Kostas Gouliamos, along with Dr. Nora Liassis, Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, conferred on Mr. Demetrios Christofias an honorary doctorate following the pertinent decision of the University’s Senate. Building on his longstanding commitment to peace and social justice as President and through his profession, President Christofias has concentrated a great deal of his efforts on promoting the country’s goals, and has earned his reputation through an active commitment to the welfare not only of the people in Cyprus but of all communities and nations whose human rights have been violated. Mr. Christofias is the first president of Cyprus to be granted this highest academic honour in his own country. Under his leadership, Cyprus will hold its first ever EU Presidency during the second half of 2012.
