Background:

The DataScEd4CiEn project is co-funded with support of the European Union under the ERASMUS+ KA2 – Cooperation partnerships in school education programme. It aims to support the development of young students’ (ages 9-15) data science literacy, as a powerful tool for addressing real-world issues related to civic engagement and social justice. The project objectives include developing a systematic framework for teaching data science in STEAM curricula for ages 9-15, empowering teachers to implement collaborative data-centered scenarios, equipping them with necessary skills and resources, evaluating the impact on teachers’ knowledge and students’ learning outcomes, and establishing a transnational community for ongoing professional development in data science education.

Overall Purpose of the Job:

Researcher: The contract will have a duration of 26 months. The researcher will have an active role in all Working Packages assisting the EUC project team, coordinated by Prof. Maria Meletiou-Mavrotheris, to develop and organize the following:

  • Contribute to the development of a conceptual framework for Data Science within STEAM Education at the teacher professional development level, and at the student level
  • Contribute to the design and local pilot testing of a blended learning professional development course on Data Science Education in STEAM for Civic Engagement and Social Justice, to equip primary and secondary teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to integrate data science and civic engagement concepts into their curriculum
  • Provide guidance to the local team of primary and secondary in-service teachers in designing, developing, pilot-testing, evaluating, and revising STEAM scenarios aimed at promoting data science education for civic engagement and social justice.
  • Participate in research activities aimed at exploring how the professional development course and the STEAM scenarios on Data Science Education in STEAM for Civic Engagement and Social Justice are adapted and enacted in the national setting, and evaluate their impact on teachers’ professional knowledge and students’ dispositions and learning potential.
  • Contribute to the preparation of project reports and other requested material for the submission to the funding agency as required.
  • Undertake duties which contribute to the completion of the project’s activities and outputs.
  • Participate if required in the organization of events (consortium meetings, training courses, etc.)
  • Contribute to the organization of or attending project meetings (in person or virtually) when required, locally and with the wider team.
  • Present research progress and outcomes at appropriate conferences, seminars, workshops, and other dissemination venues.
  • Contribute to the drafting and submission of papers to appropriate conference proceedings, and peer reviewed journals.
  • Carry out any other duties deemed necessary within the scope, spirit and purpose of the project.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in Mathematics/Statistics Education
  • At least 5 years of teaching experience in primary or secondary schools in Cyprus
  • Previous experience in the implementation of EU funded projects
  • Previous experience in pre-service or in-service teacher training in the field of statistics education and/or data science education
  • Scientific publications in the field of ICT-enhanced teaching and learning, statistics education, and/or data science education
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Experience in research design and research ethics procedures
  • Experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • Experience in project management and implementation
  • Extensive IT skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work with colleagues at all levels
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Greek
  • Team working abilities.

The successful candidate will work closely with Prof Maria Meletiou-Mavrotheris, who will be directly responsible for the day-to-day management leads and will ensure that all the WP activities and expected results are met on time and to target.
