European University Cyprus organises Conference on Prison Education

A conference of the European program ELMIP: EMPOWERING LEARNING MODELS IN PRISON will take place at European University Cyprus. The EMIP program is co-funded by the European Union’s “Justice” Program and coordinated by European University Cyprus. The Prison Department, ENOROS Cyprus and Ergoplan Greece are partners of the program. The conference will take place on Friday, 1 November, at European University Cyprus, at 11:00-15:30, at the BETA Amphitheatre.

The event will be addressed on behalf of the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mr George Savvidis, by Mr Aristos Tsiartas, Head of the Human Rights Section of the Ministry of Justice and Public Order. Addresses will also be delivered by the Director of the Prisons Department, Anna Aristotelous, and the Rector of European University Cyprus, Professor Costas Gouliamos.

The speakers at the Conference include Professor Marios Vryonidis, scientific leader for the project “Education in socially marginalized groups”; Dr Olga Solomontos Kountouri, scientific research associate who will be speaking on “Philosophy and Project Material”; Dr Panagiotis Stavrinidis, Associate Professor of Developmental Psychology at the University of Cyprus who will develop the topic “Alcohol and Antisocial Behaviour in Adolescence: Psychopathological and Psychosocial Indicators”; and Dr Foteini Milioni, Doctorate Lawyer and Director of the Athens Return Program who will speak on “The Contribution of Education to the Social Reintegration of Prisoners”.

Video clips with experiences from trainers and project participants will be shown, while the results of the research on prison guards and prisoners will also be presented. The Conference will conclude with the presentation of attendance certificates.
